The Fundraising Goal
Head and neck cancers have been quietly rising for years, but most people still know almost nothing about them. Oracle do extraordinary work supporting patients, funding research and pushing for earlier diagnosis. If a month of early mornings can put £10,000 behind that work, I'll happily put the miles in.
Head and neck cancer is the umbrella term for cancers of the mouth, tongue, tonsils, throat, voice box, salivary glands, sinuses and thyroid. A growing proportion of these, particularly cancers of the tonsils and base of the tongue (the oropharynx), are caused by high-risk strains of the Human Papillomavirus, or HPV.
P16 is a protein biomarker that pathologists use to identify these HPV-driven cancers. When a head and neck tumour tests P16 positive, it usually means the cancer was caused by a long-dormant HPV infection rather than traditional risk factors like smoking or alcohol.
The picture is stark. HPV is widely known for its link to cervical cancer, but far fewer people realise it can also cause throat cancer. Cases have risen significantly in recent years, particularly among men, yet awareness remains low.
