How long does a people trace take?

The short answer

A standard UK trace typically completes within two to five working days, and many report sooner. Complex cases, thin starting information, subjects who move frequently or international elements extend that, while urgent instructions supporting court deadlines can be prioritised, with same day results possible where the data cooperates.

What moves the dial

Speed follows the quality of the starting information and the subject’s data footprint. A full name with date of birth and a last address usually resolves quickly; a common name with no date of birth takes longer because candidate identities must be separated and verified. Subjects in shared or short term accommodation, recent movers whose records have not caught up, and deliberate evaders sit at the slower end, sometimes needing enquiry work beyond the databases.

Verification is where the time goes

Finding a possible address is fast; confirming it is current is the craft. We cross check independent sources and recency indicators before reporting, because an unverified address that fails at service costs you far more than an extra day of checking. The report states the confidence basis so instructing solicitors can rely on it in applications, including alternative service applications where the trace evidences the steps taken.

When the clock is against you

Tell us the deadline, a limitation date, a hearing, an expiring claim form, and we triage accordingly, running urgent traces in parallel with planned service so the four month period under CPR 7.5 is protected. For subjects believed to have left the UK, timescales differ; see tracing someone abroad.
